Data Center Load Bank

More information

Load testing of Data Centers during commissioning quickly shows you the weak points of the system. Many data centers do not usually have a high traffic  first period of commissioning, increases over time and reaches its design capacity. Therefore, it is impossible to simulate the full capacity operation of the entire system with the loads in the field.A data center is a facility that is established for the collection, storage, processing and distribution of data produced by an organization or system and contains servers, storage devices, network devices, air conditioning systems, power systems and these systems work safely.

In the Data Center sector, where data security and service quality gain importance day by day and competition is intense, interruptions and malfunctions cause serious costs and liabilities. That's why testing Infrastructure and power systems is of paramount importance.

Why Use a Load Bank in Data Centers?

Load banks are used for different purposes during the commissioning, maintenance and operation periods of a data center.
Numerous critical components in Data Centers are tested by the help of Load Bank, including backup diesel generators, UPS systems, HVAC systems, communication systems, distribution units, control units and server racks.

1. Commissioning of Data Center

Load testing of Data Centers during commissioning quickly shows you the weak points of the system. Many data centers do not usually have a high traffic  first period of commissioning, increases over time and reaches its design capacity. Therefore, it is impossible to simulate the full capacity operation of the entire system with the loads in the field.

Load Bank Control System has 55 different test scenarios to perform tests in accordance with TIER3 and TIER4 test procedures. With the help of the test scenarios to be defined, the desired current, power and temperature values can test the system for the desired time. In this way, the performance of energy lines, cooling and heating systems in full capacity operating scenario is monitored. The Load Bank Test at the installation stage will not only prevent delays in the project schedule, but also provide a serious cost advantage, as the elimination of deficient and incorrect applications that will arise after the settlement will cause a serious loss of time and money.

2. Data Center Periodic Maintenance

Data centers are facilities that cannot tolerate unplanned downtime. That's why all hardware and equipment has a backup. Periodic maintenance is carried out to ensure that these equipments can serve in case of need.
Most data centers have backup UPS systems and power sources such as diesel generators to avoid power grid failures. However, load testing must be carried out regularly to ensure that these equipment will operate when needed. Load banks are the most effective way to test and stress electrical systems for maintenance and periodic testing purposes. Various load tests are performed in scenarios suitable for maintenance procedures and the results are reported. Thus, problems that can be changed or corrected for efficient operation of the data center are identified.

3. Expansion of Data Center
Data centers are often built larger than originally required to meet growing demand over time. As the data center grows, accurate simulation of power usage and cooling adaptation will be required. New components and hardware added to the system must prove operation and efficiency, especially where critical information is stored. Load banks are used at this point for testing and commissioning new components.

What Types of Load Banks Are Used?

19” Rack Mount Load Bank

LOADRON Server Simulator Load Banks are used for testing servers in commissioning data centers. It is designed to be easily mounted on rack cabinets or temporary racks in data centers. In this way, it will ensure that all energy infrastructure and protection systems reaching the server are tested.
With the LOADRON UniCore Load Control System, you can easily control all load banks in the data center from a single point and define test scenarios. If you wish, you can command a single unit or 250 Loadbanks simultaneously or independently. With LOADRON rack type load banks, you can perform IST Tests in accordance with TIER III and TIER IV Standards and ensure the quality of the facility.

Stationary DC Load Bank

In data centers, there are batteries in a large number of equipment such as UPS, generators, fixed storage systems. Lead acid battery cells are generally used in standard data centers. However, some innovative data centers have switched to current battery types such as lithium - ion etc.

Stationary load banks are used for periodic maintenance and testing of all battery and DC Power supplies in data centers. Fixed DC Load Banks can be requested with different voltage options up to 1000VDC as well as 24V-48V options. Current values vary according to battery capacity and quantities in the facility. High precision load and capacity measurement tests between 0-1000A can be performed in a single cabinet. The tests performed can be monitored and recorded instantly on the PC with the UniCORE Load Control System. Records can be transferred or a test result report can be created at any time.
With its innovative technologies, LOADRON DC Load Banks can be integrated into the building management system (BMI) or SCADA systems in the Facility, or they can be controlled independently.

Stationary AC Load Bank

AC Load Banks are used in routine testing of generators in data centers (NFPA 110) to prevent wet-stacking problems in low-load generators.
Stationary load banks are used for periodic maintenance and testing of all battery and DC Power supplies in data centers. Stationary AC Load Banks can be requested with different voltage options such as 240V / 400V / 480V. Load Bank power values vary according to the generator capacities and quantities in the facility. There are different models between 50kW-6MVA in a single cabin. The tests performed can be monitored and recorded instantly on the PC with the UniCORE Load Control System. Records can be transferred or a test result report can be created at any time.

With its innovative technologies, LOADRON AC Load Banks can be integrated with the building management system (BMI) or SCADA systems in the Facility, or they can be controlled independently.
