High Voltage Load Banks are equipment used to simulate the loads required in the testing, maintenance and commissioning process of power sources such as large generators, gas turbines, with typical voltage levels such as 4kV, 14kV, 36kV.

It is especially critical for projects that require high-capacity loads. It is generally produced as a container cabin with a capacity between 1MW-6MW. Thanks to its modular structures, it makes it possible to produce systems with a capacity of 100MW.



High Voltage Load Bank Usage Areas
High Voltage Load Banks have a variety of uses in different industries. Main areas of use:
  • Acceptance Tests: Most of the time, the required operating loads are not available in newly established factories and facilities. It is used to simulate operating loads on such drums.
  • Energy: It is used for capacity measurement tests in the field or in the service after maintenance and repair services of generators such as Wind Turbine, Gas Turbine, Generator, UPS.
  • Data Center: It is used for testing and maintenance of power supplies that secure data centers.
  • Dummy Load : It is used to prevent low-load operation (Wet Stacking) of systems such as high-capacity gas turbines. It is automatically activated when the field loads fall below 30% of the turbine's total capacity.

High Voltage (HV) Load Bank Types
HV Load banks have different groups according to the load element they contain.
Resistive Load Bank (kW)
It is the most widely used type of load bank. Resistive resistors contain load elements to load the power supply. They are manufactured using high resistance Cr-Al resistance wires or plates against heat. The power coefficients in these load banks are cosø =1.
Inductive (Reactive) Load Bank (kVAr)
They contain "Inductive" load elements. They are also known as reactive. A copper wire wound coil is used to form the inductive elements. Unlike resistive loads, the inductive load current follows a sinusoidal pattern, peaking after the voltage sine wave, so the maximum, minimum, and zero points for voltage changes are out of phase with the current. As a result, inductive coils produce lagging power factors.
Mixed Type Combined Load Bank (kVA)
It is a type of load bank that contains both resistive resistors and inductive coils in the same cabinet. The resistive and inductive elements inside can be operated separately, or the power factor can be adjusted by operating them in combination if desired (cosø = 0 - 1). It is often used to simulate systems affected by electric motors or electromagnetic devices in a network or system.

Load Banks can be produced with various cabin types and ventilation types in accordance with different needs. In order to get the right result, these issues should be considered when choosing a load bank.
Load Bank Protection Classes
If the Load Bank is to be used in a closed environment that will not be affected by environmental conditions, it can be preferred with the Indoor Type Cabinet with IP20 Protection class.
If it will work under a porch in an external environment, cabinets between IP20 / IP41 will be suitable.
Apart from these, load banks with IP54 and IP 56 protection classes can be produced that can work safely in the external environment without taking any extra precautions.
Cooling Fans
Each load bank has cooling fans to transfer the heated air. These fans can vary as 3-phase high flow fans or jet fans. It is ed by analyzing the flow rate (m3/h) and pressure (pa) values of the fan, according to the power and volume of the resistors to be cooled.
In order for these fans to work safely, it is necessary to leave a clean area in the suction and air outlet directions. Therefore, the correct air outlet type should be ed according to the suitability of the area where the equipment will be located.
Load banks are also divided into two in terms of air outlet direction.
  • Horizontal Air Outlet Load Bank
  • Vertical Air Outlet Load Bank
Electrical Features 
Load banks with different voltage levels and frequency values can be produced.
Equipment that consumes alternating current are AC Load Banks. The stages are kW, kVAr or kVA. They can be produced at frequencies such as 50Hz / 60Hz. Voltage levels should be ed according to the project needs because the network voltage values vary according to countries and regions. For example: Different voltage levels such as 6.6kV, 13.8kV, 36kV can be produced as standard.
 Auxiliary Voltage 
Fan and control supply can be used externally from the mains, or it can be used from the step-down transformer system inside the load bank with a or switch. This provides convenience in field tests performed away from the network.
HV Load Banks needs extra safety procedures and precautions.    
  • Detailed training is provided for all operators and maintenance team, so that they learn the system.
  • All steps and related contactors are protected against short circuit with the help of separate fuses for each phase.
  • Load banks have air flow sensors as they are of vital importance. In this way, if the air flow is interrupted for any reason, the load bank automatically disables the loads and turns off the system.
  • There are over-temperature protections against sudden temperature rise. The device temperature is monitored instantaneously and if it exceeds the allowable temperatures, it gives a warning and protects the system.
  • Power connection terminals and all live parts have fully separated compartments to protect them from accidental contact. It is designed to prevent contact when energized.
  • Appropriate warning/caution statements are placed on the exterior of the HV Loadbank, access panels, hot surfaces. Thus, injuries and accidents are prevented.

Containerized load banks are designed to withstand the rigors of both shipping and weather conditions. And due to its standard dimensions, it also provides advantages in terms of logistics.

Trailered Type (Mobile) HV Load Bank
It is suitable for HV Load Banks with usage scenarios in different locations. Load Bank cable set and accessories are mounted on a trailer designed in accordance with its capacity and transported by a vehicle. Trailer and equipment are designed in accordance with vehicle traffic. Mobile HV Load Banks are useful for capacities between 1000kW and 5MW.
